We have a great Blog Hop for you today! Serendipity Stamps has come out with a really cool OWL die! Lots of thought and planning went into this cute guy! I have a tutorial below.
For this A2 card I paired him up with Graphic 45's Steampunk Spells paper for Halloween.
He is backed with a rusty-red paper and I used a 1/2" circle punched paper behind his eyes. I put some black rhinestones on top of his eyes and you can see the shine of them in the picture.
My 2nd card has a woodland feel. I colored the backing paper for the owl with Copic Markers before gluing the layers together. Below I show how to do this.
Foam tape keeps the wood layer up and off the owl. He is adhered flat to the black background paper.
Here is a tutorial on how I made the multi-colored owl.
Take the die and put 2 layers of paper under it. The outline paper (black) should go first against the cut marks of the die. The lighter paper goes under the black. Send it through your die machine to cut.
Here is what you get. Some of the small black pieces may stick to the lighter layer but I didn't have that problem. If you do, just pick off the pieces. See the cut marks on the light layer? This will show you where to color and because it was the 2nd paper layer, it didn't cut all the way through the paper except around the edges.
Here is the backside of the light layer.
Use your favorite markers to color the light layer. I used these Copic colors to color the sections of the light layer. Eyebrows: E41, Eyes: YR18, Beak and claws: YR23, Side and bottom feathers: E43, Branch: E47. You don't have to stay within the lines.
Glue the black layer over the light layer with your favorite glue. I like ZIG's 2 Way Glue Pen. The little bit of white showing around the edges of the bottom feathers bothers me so.....
I went around the edges of the owl with a Cat's Eye pad which covered most of the white. For a little more detail I used a dark grey Copic to get into the corners (N9).
Here is what the backside looks like after inking the edges. At this point you can dry emboss it through your die machine or use a stylus to push the light paper into the openings.
Here are just a few of these cuties I made with different color schemes. You can use a 1/4" circle punch to add a paper layer on top of his eyes if you like. I am having so much fun with this die and plan to make lots more!
